What's a QuiltLadder™? A QuiltLadder™ is basically a quilt display rack.

This model of QuiltLadder™ is designed to lean against some kind of support; usually a wall.  A QuiltLadder™ can be built to just about any size. The large one in this photo is almost 7 feet tall and about 40 inches wide. While the model to the left is portable since it is not fastened to the wall, QuiltLadders can easily be attached to structure (e.g. walls) for semi-permanent installation. Models are also available that are free-standing as well as ceiling-mounted. QuiltLadders can be built to just about any size.

Are the rungs adjustable? Yes
The vertical spacing of all "rungs" on the QuiltLadder™ to the left are easily adjustable. Unlike real ladders, the "rungs" on the QuiltLadder are not structural elements. That is, the QuiltLadder does not gain any needed structural strength from the rungs. That means you can use as many/few rungs as you want.  The number of rungs desired is specified when we take your QuiltLadder order.
What are QuiltLadders made from? Depends on what you want.

The model to the left is made from a high-quality, clear maple.  We can easily obtain Walnut, Maple, Cherry, Pine, and a variety of other domestic and imported hardwoods. (In general, we recommend domestic woods.) In terms of softwoods, we can construct your rack out of pine if you wish. Pine looks nice with the occasional knot, but it's not a particularly strong wood. Also, if you wish, rungs and sideboards can be different wood species/colors.  We will not use Pine for rungs due to its strength level and the risk of "sap seep" onto a quilt.  Pine sideboards with maple rungs is an attractive combination.

Are QuiltLadders available in both assembled and unassembled form?

Yes.

Probably the most cost-efficient way of purchasing a QuiltLadder is to order a semi-finished, unassembled model that can be easily put together in about 30 minutes with only a dozen or so wood screws (provided). All QuiltLadders are available in unassembled form. The large QuiltLadder pictured on this page was assembled with 12 wood screws in about 15 minutes. If you prefer a completely assembled QuiltLadder then shipping can be an issue if you live a considerable distance from our location (Boise, Idaho). What type of wood finishes are available?
QuiltLadders are available with or without wood finish.
If you'd prefer to receive your QuiltLadder unfinished, that is no problem. Otherwise, we can apply a finish for you. Some woods, such as maple take a nice sanding that leaves a natural and durable finish with a smooth, fabric-friendly touch. Other woods such as oak have n pronounced and open grain that can benefit from an applied finish. Of prime consideration is the effect the natural wood surface will have on quilt fabric. Because of this, we suggest that open-pored woods such as oak or ash be finished with a durable polyurethane that will minimize friction between wood and fabric. For the ultimate in smooth surfaces, open-pored woods can also be filled prior to urethane application. Basically, there are many options with regard to finish. We suggest you consider your own tastes and choose accordingly. Then, when you order your QuiltLadder you can communicate your finish preferences.
